KNOWLEDGE

Industry A knowledge and understanding of the overall background of the furniture industry.
Organisation Knowledge of the business you are working in. For example understand the manufacturing process and where your role fits
Materials An understanding of materials within the industry, there properties and characteristics
Customers Understanding who is the industries customers, what they require and how to deliver. E.g. packaged, delivered etc.
Quality Standards Knowledge of the quality criteria which applies to the products and how to confirm they have been met. Able to read and interpret specifications, drawings, cutting lists and other relevant technical information used within your organisation.
Health, Safety and Environment An understanding of the health, safety and environmental requirements and rules. Also have knowledge of sustainability within the industry.

Maintain Tools & Equipment Perform regular maintenance checks on machinery, tools and equipment used.
Problem Solving Identify problems fast, be able to solve and apply relevant resolutions.

Group  A
Machinery, Tools and Equipment Setting up and operating machinery, tools and equipment used to produce furniture. Understanding each tool and various equipment used
 Components Make sections of furniture to specification. Understanding how and where various components are used
Cutting Selecting and using the correct equipment to cut materials
Joints Understanding the principles of joints used when creating furniture
Veneers and Laminates  

Select, prepare and apply veneers to furniture

Assembly Assembling sections of furniture. Understanding the sequence of constructing and why this is important
Finishing Apply stains, sealers, basecoats and finishes to production furniture

 

Group  B
Measure and Mark Out Measure and mark out materials to specification
Sanding Sanding materials for preparation prior to assembly, post-assembly and de-nibbing. Understand grit sizes and the process of sanding
Cramping Position sections and apply cramps to ensure products are positioned securely to specification
Fittings Ready and assemble sections to specification, finishing and checking the assembly conforms to descriptions
Gluing Apply adhesives to sections. Understand types, methods and processes involved in gluing
 

Jigs and Templates

Use and maintain jigs and templates for furniture production.  (Jigs ensure repeatability and accuracy in the production of furniture. The various types include hand held, mounted or on a workbenches.)
Edge Banding Undertake edge-banding process following typical running procedures.
Electrical/Mechanical Fittings  Fitting mechanical or electrical features to furniture
Rectification/Rework  Carry out restoration of furniture; this includes assessing and repairing items
Safe Handling and Storage Pack and store products and components, understanding and following the procedures for safe handling of products

Required Qualifications

To qualify for this apprenticeship training you will need a level 1 in English and maths and take the test for level 2 for both prior to taking the end point assessment.

For individuals with an education, health and care plan or legacy statement the minimum requirement for the apprenticeship is a level 3 in English and maths. Sign language qualifications are an alternative to the English qualification.
